8th April 2008:
Today saw the start of Translink’s unique 3-day “Have a Go Day” event aimed at encouraging more females to become bus drivers in an industry that is associated more with men.
Catherine Mason, Group Chief Executive of NITHC and Translink was at the event and explains why women should come along; “Clearly, women are every bit as capable as men when it comes to being a successful and skillful bus driver. This initiative will offer woman the opportunity to have a go behind the wheel, take part in ticketing demonstrations, and even talk to some of our current female drivers about their experiences. We want to remove any misconceptions or fears that would hinder them from seriously considering bus driving as a rewarding and fulfilling career.
Bus driving can offer flexibility around the demands of home life with the options of term-time, full-time or part-time available. In addition, it allows you to interact with a variety of different people and play a key role in serving the needs of your local community.”
Avril Connor, Ulsterbus Inspector at Newcastle who has been employed by Translink for 13 years comments, “I thoroughly enjoy my job. It can be challenging at times yet it is truly rewarding. I get to meet a variety of different people everyday and as a mother of two daughters my job can easily work around the demands of my home life. I recommend other women to come along to our “Have a Go Day” event and see for themselves just how bus driving is not just a man’s world.”
There are still some limited places left for Wednesday and Thursday so if you would like to attend please reserve your place by calling our Human Resource Dept on 028 90 899400 ext 2295/2204 during office hours.
