Construction work on Antrim’s new £2.9million integrated bus and rail centre is now underway.
The major station development project is set to last 18 months – two years and will transform bus and rail facilities in the area.
It will deliver a first class transport hub fit for today’s busy lifestyle and the new facility will also be Northern Ireland’s first sustainable bus and rail centre
The project will involve the sensitive restoration of the old railway station’s listed façade. It will combine this important piece of history with a range of cutting-edge features to ensure the facility’s environmental impact is carefully controlled and that it operates as efficiently as possible.
The integrated bus and train passenger facilities will include: an integrated bus/rail ticket office; park and ride facility providing 180 spaces; enclosed modern accessible waiting area; new public toilets, new parent room; commercial/retail space; new staff facilities; and a new traffic management system and improved pedestrian access
Additional sustainable features include: roof mounted solar panels; natural ventilation system; a naturally insulated green roof; grey water harvesting system; and reclaimed clay facing brick and triple glazed curtain walling.
The project has been funded by the Department for Regional Development and through the Sustainable Stations Project (SUSstations), with support from the EU Interreg IVB North West Europe Programme (NWE)*.
