Free Travel in Republic of Ireland
As from 2nd April 2007 all Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland senior citizens can avail of free internal travel in both jurisdictions.

To avail of free internal travel in the Republic of Ireland, NI senior citizens simply show or flash their Senior SmartPass on the relevant bus or train. The procedure for travelling cross-border remains unchanged.

To avail of free internal travel in Northern Ireland on Translink bus and rail services, ROI senior citizens must apply for an ROI Senior SmartPass by completing an application form available from their local DFSA office. They will NOT be able to avail of free internal travel in Northern Ireland without this pass.

ROI senior citizens can still avail of free cross-border travel under the current paper-based ticketing arrangements.

NI holders of the Blind or War Pensioner SmartPass DO NOT get free internal travel in the Republic of Ireland but can still avail of free cross-border travel from any point in Northern Ireland to any point in the Republic of Ireland and vice versa.
