Hundreds of commuters using Translink’s Park & Ride service at Sprucefield today, the very first Monday of winter, were greeted by a very welcome treat – hot buttered toast and tea courtesy of Irwin’s bakery.

With the clocks ‘going back’ on Saturday night, Irwin’s anticipated that NI workers would be feeling the ‘Monday morning blues’ even more keenly now that darker, colder mornings are officially on the way.  So in a bid to make tired, cold and grumpy commuters glad they got out of bed, Irwin’s teamed up with Translink to provide Sprucefield Park & Ride users with some much needed comfort food before they jumped on the bus into Belfast City Centre.

During the bleakest hours of the morning, 6.30am to 9pm, Irwin’s served up slice after slice of toasty hot, buttered Rankin Selection Cheesy Toast and Irwin’s Nutty Krust along with mugs of tea and coffee – putting a smile on the face of commuters, especially those who had missed their breakfast.

“With the clocks going back and winter setting in, we knew that there would be a lot of miserable commuters heading into work this morning and we wanted to cheer them up,” said Michael Murphy from Irwin’s.  “There’s no doubt about it that a slice of hot buttered Nutty Krust or Cheesy Toast is not just great winter fuel but is also a great reminder of the cosiness and comfort of home – just what’s needed on a cold winter’s morning!”

And users of Sprucefield Park & Ride are in for another winter treat as Translink has from today (30 Oct) introduced a special family ticket deal – £10 for two adults and one child, £11.25 for two adults and two children, £13.75 for two adults and three children, and £15.00 for two adults and four children – perfect in the run-up to Christmas shopping season.  Translink’s two main Belfast Park & Ride sites – Black’s Road and Sprucefield – are now attracting more than 1000 passengers each week.
