£12.6 Million Investment for new Newry Rail Station

30th January 2008:

Translink has announced one of its most significant station redevelopment projects to date, confirming a £ 12.6 million investment in a new rail station for Newry supported by a new road link and a 300-space Park & Ride facility.

Following a competitive tendering process, Translink have revealed today (30 January) that contracts are to be awarded to local construction company’s Felix O’Hare and Co Ltd for the building of the new station and park and ride and Fox Building Engineering Ltd for the new access road.

The redevelopment set to begin in February and due to be completed by late 2009, will deliver a modern, fully accessible, purpose-built facility with greater passenger capacity, comfort and convenience features.

“This is great news for the local community in Newry and in particular the quarter of a million passengers Newry station currently serves annually”, explained Clive Bradberry, Infrastructure Executive for Translink. “It demonstrates our commitment to the ongoing modernisation and upgrade of our services in order to deliver further passenger growth on both the local and cross-border rail network”.

“While there will be some initial disruption for passengers including reduced park and ride facilities as a result of this work,  we would ask for local support for this project.  We have introduced additional free shuttle bus services from Monday this week to operate between Newry Buscentre and the rail station.  We would encourage passengers to use this service where possible. Full details of these services will be available from www.translink.co.uk , the call centre on 028 90 66 66 30 or Newry rail station.
