Accessibility Features

The new trains’ design incorporates many special features that improve accessibility. The Transport Advisory Group, part of Disability Action, provided helpful input at the specification stage. The trains interior comply with all the relevant Rail Vehicles Accessibility Regulations.

Features assisting passengers on boarding and leaving the train include:

audible announcements made over the on board Public Address system stating which station or halt the train is approaching;
the positioning of door control panels at accessible heights, both inside and on the train exterior; and
door entrances wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs, the elderly or other passengers with restricted mobility, and people with push-chairs.

Among the many other accessibility features on board are:

Braille signage on passenger information notices at toilets, above the train doors and at emergency and safety notices; and
the positioning of handrails on door uprights in vestibules and rounded grab handles on the top of some seats in a colour contrasting with the seating.

On board, there is a specific area designed to accommodate two wheelchair-using customers, and their travelling companions. Belts and safety catches provided may be used to secure the wheelchair user during the journey and there are two special fold-down tables. Tip-up seats accommodate travelling companions.

The area has four handrails fixed to the sidewalls and another one on the exterior of the WC module wall. There are also two ‘call for aid’ devices.
