New improved Ulsterbus services take to the roads in Bangor

13th June 2008:

From 30th June Ulsterbus passengers in the Bangor area are set to benefit from a new, improved Town Service with a new simplified and standardised modern route network, designed to meet customer needs. This will mean regular and more frequent buses throughout the day with a clock face timetable that’s easy to understand.

This change in services provides better integration with rail services making it easier to transfer from the town service to the train to Belfast.  Bangor town service will now run from 6.30am to 6.45pm.

All Ulsterbus town service numbers will change. This will bring them into line with other town service numbers across Northern Ireland.

Additional improvements include: low floor vehicles on all town services and improved passenger information including colour coded maps.
Speaking about the Ulsterbus review Translink’s Billy McMaster said, “We are delighted to be able to offer our customers in Bangor these improved services and are confident that they will be welcomed by the local community.  The changes should mean our services are even easier to use, more accessible and better suited to our passengers’ needs. We are planning a passenger information campaign to inform the public of these changes and would encourage passengers to pick up a new timetable or view on line at Translink.co.uk in order to become familiar with their services and in particular the new service numbers.

“Low floor vehicles will be used on all Town Services enabling us to improve accessibility for parents with small children as well as those with mobility difficulties. Improved connections with rail services will mean commuters will have more options to transfer between travel modes,” he added.

“Public transport has a significant contribution to make towards delivering modern, healthy and efficient towns. As such we are committed to delivering a growing integrated public transport network, which will ultimately support the economic growth and social development of the region.”

Mayor of North Down, Alderman Leslie Cree, MLA, commented: “The news that a more regular and frequent bus service will soon be delivered in the Bangor area is very welcome and I am delighted that Translink has chosen to make this investment in support of local infrastructure.  The measures the organisation is taking to improve accessibility on the service for those with mobility difficulties are also to be applauded.”

"I am pleased to learn that Translink will be undertaking a comprehensive information campaign and seeking to ensure that all passengers are aware of the changes prior to them being implemented.  This is critical as many local people rely on the bus service to get to work, doctor's appointments, etc, and unexpected changes to the schedule would cause problems."

"With a new improved service I would hope that many more people will choose to leave the car behind and use the bus to travel around the local area.  By doing so they will not only save money but help to save the environment by reducing our local carbon footprint."
